At 5am (UK time) tomorrow morning (Saturday the 13th of June), there will be a mad scramble to register unique Facebook web addresses like www.facebook.com/john.smith/. It conjurs images of people sat bleary-eyed in sleeping bags, supping strong coffee, waiting for the moment that they can finally click on the submit button.
It may not have the charm of queuing up to get Wimbledon Centre Court tickets, or the value of being first in to the latest Harrod's sale, but for some people being the person to "own" the Facebook URL for your name is seen as a big deal. Or at least that's the way the media seem to be spinning it. Here at Internet Geeks HQ we did a very scientific show of hands research study which seemed to indicate that this group of experienced Internet users would not be rating their Facebook address higher than a couple of hours in bed (or in some cases a couple of hours still out on the town).
In all honesty, it is hard to see the true value of this sort of address (much like it might be argued it is hard to see the true value of Facebook overall). It might be considered heresy to say it, but it isn't exactly hard to find you if you're on Facebook, and this URL can only really be a bit of vanity. Some might argue that it has value in years to come, but you're still better off with yourname.com or yourname.co.uk.
