17p in every £1 spent online

18 July 2008

According to an article published on the BBC, UK shoppers now spend 17p of every £1 on the Internet rather than in traditional "real world" stores. When you add to this the reported amount of money spent in Tesco (not including the other supermarkets), which was apparently a further 12.5p in every £1, it is easy to see how many traditional retailers might feel the pinch.

It is easy to see why consumers might want to shop online when times are tough. These aren't just luxury purchases that are being made now. We've moved beyond the traditional areas of books, CDs and computer hardware. Clothes, toys and even food are being purchased in huge amounts from the Internet as people seek out bargains from retailers that don't carry all of the overheads that a traditional "bricks and mortar" enterprise might have.

Many smaller enterprises are now able to carry out their business online as the cost of setting up has come down. We at Internet Geeks are proud to have done our part in this. Our e-commerce solutions have helped small and specialist businesses like Wilkinsons of Norwich and HarperWells to establish themselves online and sell to an international audience. If you'd like to see how we might be able to help you do something similar, why not drop us a line.
